How to Select the Right Scroll Saw
The first thing that people what to know when starting with scrolling is what saw to buy. If you are buying your first scroll saw or if you are upgrading to a better one, there are many things that you need to consider. Seriously considering these important aspects of a scroll saw is necessary to have an informed purchasing decision.
Scroll work will not do with a saw that requires pinned blades. What you will need are standard 5″ pinless blades. The reason why pinned blades will not do despite its advantages is because they are not able to cut small inside details cuts since you need to drill a big hole to get the blade’s pins through.
You should be able to easily change blades in your scroll saw. This is because some scroll saw projects have many holes. If this is the situation then you need to remove the end of the blade from the holder, thread it through the wood, then remount it in the holder many times. This should be done easily and comfortably with your scroll saw. It is best to choose a saw where the arm can be raised and held in position. This type of saw makes the process easier.
Most scroll saws come with features for speed. In many projects, slowing down blade speed is important in order not to burn the edges of the wood when cutting. There are some scroll saws that requires belt changing to change speeds. An electronic speed control is the best feature for a scroll saw.
If the saw vibrates, it can be very distracting when you work so it is best if you find one with minimum vibrations. There are some saw designs that causes that saw to vibrate. The more expensive the saw that you buy, the lesser vibrations it makes. Mounting your saw on a stand, helps to reduce vibration. A sturdily mounted saw and a heavier saw combination will reduce vibration. There are stores that sell stands for scroll saws.
You should also consider the depth of the throat if you will be cutting very large projects. If you saw has a small throat, then the piece you can swing around on the table while you cut will also be limited. Spiral blades are ideal if you don’t want to rotate the work at all.
Table size should also be considered since it is very difficult to work on a project when most of your wood is hanging off the side of the scroll saw table.
All of us are limited as to how much we are willing or able to spend on a scroll saw. Sometimes it is better to buy a good old one than a new cheap one since your will get more for your money.
